Watch 700 Videos Nostalgia-Inducing Videos from the Early Days of MTV | Open Culture

Music videos for the Youtube age

Before Youtube was created music videos were live performances and then came MTV where you could watch all types of music videos from all genres however they had rules and restrictions that the artist had to follow.

Youtube was created in 2005 and it is a platform that allows anyone to upload videos with no restrictions or rules.

On Youtube everyone gets the same distribution deal meaning that artists had to start thinking of new ways to stand out and make their music unique.

Youtube changed music videos as artists would make a good song and the music video would be used to promote the song however now music videos are used as a strategy to sell an artist.

The music videos created now are used to generate money from the views they get which has meant that many artists make them unusual and crazy going all out.

Because they are used to selling the artist/ band the first music video from an artist or a band will most likely be showcasing their selling point.

For example Billie Eilish's first music video on Youtube was on Ocean Eyes which has reached over 300 million views. Her music video showcases her talent and in the video there’s no violence or swear words which builds an image that her audience can be from a wide range of age.

The tones and lighting used are soft and the light purple hold the connotation of delicacy and gentleness. This music video is a perfect example of how a music video is used to promote the artist rather than her lyrics.Looking at her music videos now she's more rebellious and loud which is a contrast from her first video. This is because now that she has her audience she is able to create her content the way she wants to knowing that people are still going to view it.
