 Goodwin Narrative Theory

Goodwins theory states that there are three different ways a music video can be created. These three ways are used to promote the song.

There are three types of ways the video and the song can be created :

  1. Illustration

  2. Amplification

  3. Disjuncture

1.Illustration

Illustration is where the video tells the story of the lyrics.

An example of this would be Beyonces ‘If I were a boy’. The lyrics mirror the visuals and compliment what she says in her song.

The lyrics talk about what she’d do if she was a man and the video reflects these lyrics with her as a police officer or her at the shooting range.

2.Amplification

This when the images amplify the lyrics as a narrative which could be used as a way to display a deeper meaning that would not be recognized by the lyrics alone.

An example of amplification would be Pinks ‘Please don’t leave me’.This is an example of amplification as the message of the song refers back to the lyrics repeatedly however it doesn't actually illustrate the song.

The video shows us how she wont let him leave in an extreme way. For example everytime he tries to leave something happens to him like him falling down the staircase hindering him from leaving.

3.Disjuncture

This is where there is very little connection between the lyrics and video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.

An example of this was Araina Grande’s Problem. Her video is mainly focusing on her promoting her as an artist rather than connecting to her lyrics.

The kind of video creates an image that tells us that she is sweet and a kind person creating a perfect star image.
