Advanced editing workshop

The advanced editing workshop was a workshop that went into detail on how a music video should be edited. This workshop is meant to help our editing skills improve and also help us when it comes to editing the music video.

The editing software we use is Adobe premiere pro.

The first thing we learned about is the clapper board and this is a device used in video production to help synchronise the picture and sound. It also designates and marks the various scenes and takes as they are filmed and audio recorded. We learned about the clapper board first as it is what will help the editor sync all the footage together and so that they know when the filming has begun and ended.

A sound sync is when you listen to the sound of the footage and what is being played and try to sync that to the soundtrack and a picture sync is when you sync the movements and the lips of the cast to the soundtrack.

When editing a music video we always edit in this order :

  • Performance cut - which is the band playing their instruments

  • Narrative cut - the extra parts

  • Then the effects and colouring

The performance cut is the most important as it is the main part of the music video and the main focus. The narrative cut and extra parts are what support the performance and they also keep the video interesting as it keeps you interested in the videos. Cleaning the edit is ensuring that all the words match and their actions mirror the lyrics. Effects and colouring comes last and this adds a more creative element to the video.

It’s important to rename the shots as it makes editing easier so when you need a specific shot you can look for what you’ve named it. It’s also important to rename the shots as the description of what is happening or the type of shot instead of something random as this way you won’t forget it.

You should also group the shots together to make it faster when editing instead of having to look through a lot of footage.

While editing a music video you have to listen to the music and cut to that to ensure that the shots match the music and lyrics. You have to show the singer's face for the first line of the lyrics as it allows the audience to know who is singing and what they look like. Grouping the shots together and showing the audience who is who allows them to have an idea of what role each band member plays. Grouping shots ensures that the music video doesn’t come out looking random. For example during a guitar solo having a shot of the guitarist playing ensures that they know that that is the guitarist. Following the movement within editing connects two different shots to each other through the band’s same action or the same thing that is happening in two shots.

The top top rule while editing are :

  • Don’t rough cut - we don’t rough cut as it usually doesn’t look good and once you do a rough cut you have to go back to actually do a fine cut which is just more work.

  • Focus on 10 secs at a time - working on 10 seconds at a time allows you to organise your work and ensures your not working on many things at a time.

  • Edit one hour at a time - being realistic while editing makes sure that you aren't over working and not trying to rush the video which would make it turn out bad.

  • Don’t show until it’s finished - allows you to work on the best version of the video without being distracted by other people's criticism.
