How are artists/bands signed?





An Artist and Repertoire is responsible for looking for new artists that are talented or unique.There job is to build their character up and develop them into successful selling artists.





Simon Cowell is a Television personality known best for being a judge on American Idol,The X factor Uk and many other big shows.


In the 1980s and 1990s he was seen as a successful record producer, talent scout and a very important consultant in the Uk music industry.


Cowell has had a close relationship with Syco Music which is a subsidiary to Sony Music Entertainment. The company has signed Louis Tomlinson, Camila Cabello, James Aurthur and Labrinth through Simon.

Simon mainly finds new artists and talents from the shows that he judges, whoever wins gets a record contract giving new artists a way to start their career.


However going on the x factor isn’t the only way an artist can be signed, an artist can be signed through making the best album, ep or demo they can and releasing it and constantly sharing it. By building a fanbase and constantly releasing music that their audience enjoys they can attract a record deal.


Another way an artist can be signed is through posting their videos and music on various platforms like instagram and youtube where anyone could come across it leading them to a record contract.

A great example would be Justin Bieber where his mother uploaded videos of his singing on Youtube and Scooter Braun a U.S talent manager came across these videos and tracked Bieber down. He was then signed to Raymond Braun Media Group, a label owned by Braun and Usher. Bieber has gone on to make hits like “As Long As You Love Me,” “Boyfriend” and “Baby”.



On a character sheet I created an upcoming artist and peared it to an underground song that I think would go with my artist.





I found the song Chill with you  by Tabitha Westley, she has 84 monthly listeners on spotify and 700 instagram followers.

What is a music campaign?

A music campaign is used to create awareness of your music.By using marketing strategies more people are able to know that your music exists or it could begin to create hype for the release.

The picture below is an example of how Spotify has used various artists in their ‘New music Friday’ campaign. They used different artists from different genres to advertise  the new playlist in order to engage their audience to the new feature.

Music campaigns use different media such as Tv, radio, newspaper and many others to promote the music.

While introducing a new artist it is important to communicate their type of personality in the best way possible in order to appeal to specific audiences.It is important while doing a campaign that an artist creates an image that targets their genre or audience.

The Songs from Ariana Grande's 'Sweetener' RANKED - Fuzzable

Ariana began promoting her album Sweetner in August 2018. She teamed up with Island Records and Landmark to create a national treasure hunt across the UK.




Fans had to go to hotspots where they would decipher a code on a billboard and then enter the code on the website. The rewards given to fans were prizes like tour tickets, CDs, merchandise and many other things.

She had thousands of fans entering the competition on various social media like twitter and snapchat.

This treasure hunt was able to create a huge amount of hype and excitement for her album.




Ariana began promoting her album Sweetener in August 2018. She teamed up with Island Records and Landmark to create a national treasure hunt across the UK.


Ariana’s marketing team made sure that her audience wasn’t only consuming her content but was also engaged in the album experience. This made her audience feel more connected to her.

The campaign was successful as Sweetener debuted no 1 on the US Billboard 200 and it earned 231,000 units in its first week from direct sales. The album also went on to be nominated for best Pop Vocal Album Grammy Award in December 2018.
